Learn How to Connect the Computer on HDTV

If you wish to learn how to connect your computer on HDTV then here is some help at hand that to understand the procedure.

Both the computer and HDTV share common interfaces. This makes matters simple for us as the primary concern has been taken care of. Read on to know the procedure better:

The commonly found interface for computers is DVI and that for HDTV’s is HDMI. If both these interfaces are present on your computer and your HDTV then you are lucky as all you have to do now is to buy a cable that can support your computer’s output resolution to that of your HDTV’s. However, doing this can be a problem because at times cables that can support the same resolutions would not be easily available. So it would be better to pick a HDTV that can accept all standard PC resolutions.

You can also convert your computer on HDTV by using the VGA component, DVI or HDMI that enables HD signals. Try and pick the digital standards as this way you would be able to use an adapter from DVI to HDMI (they both use the same signaling technology).

Once done, plug in the cable from the computer on HDTV after ensuring that they both share the same resolution. If possible, try and use the displays on a native resolution like 1280×768.

You could also look for the desired resolution by using the Powerstrip software. Once installed you would be able to locate the required resolution levels.

If your HDTV still does not accept the resolution then you are left with no other option but to either buy a video card that supports the output component or buy a VGA with a component converter.

As long as the resolutions match, any of the above mentioned methods would enable computer on HDTV.

Review VIZIO VL370M – 37″ LCD TV – widescreen – 1080p (FullHD) – HDTV

VIZIO VL370M – 37″ LCD TV – widescreen – 1080p (FullHD) – HDTV Best Review

We decided to upgrade to an HDTV to prepare for using a Mac Mini as a media center (and drop the cable!) Of course, to make that work well, we needed a high-resolution display, so we decided to look only at 1080p-capable screens. Out living room is pretty small, so a 37″ seemed adequate.

We were primarily looking at Samsung and Sony models, when my wife spotted this at Costco for under 0. I wasn’t all that familiar with Vizio products, but I am a bit leery of smaller manufacturers. However, the picture looked good, and what I read gave me hope, so we went ahead and bought one.

I’m very happy with it so far. It has a good suite of inputs: 3 HDMI (2 rear/1 side), 2 component (1 rear/1 side), 2 composite (1 rear/1 side), 1 S-video (rear), 1 cable/antenna (rear), and a VGA (rear). I’ve tried the HDMI, component, and composite inputs, and all of them display very nicely on the screen. We don’t actually have the computer connected yet, so I can’t confirm how well it works, but I suspect it will be just fine.

We have most of the audio from our various devices going through a surround receiver, so I’ve only been using the TV speakers for the Wii. It’s just a touch tinny–more than adequate, really, but not the same quality as the picture. However, since that’s not a big issue for us, I don’t hold it against the Vizio.

A nice additional benefit is that it is quite energy-efficient for a non-LED backlight; it uses about 110 watts. The remote is well laid out, and the on-screen menus (input selection and picture adjustment) are perfectly acceptable. It’s got a 60Hz refresh rate. I don’t have a lot of experience with 120Hz displays, but we haven’t had a lot of problem with motion artifact with this set.

Highly recommended as a very nice TV for such a good price.

Great HDTV, Great Price at Costco – J. Robertson – San Diego
My Wife and I bought this TV at Costco for 499.99. Best Price for a 1080p HDTV! Awesome HD picture. Will be updating our DVD player to a blu-ray/DVD upscaling player shortly. I agree with the one post that the analog display is good, not great, but we did not buy an HDTV to use with 20th century analog technology! Highly recomend this HDTV!

Good HDTV – P. SHADWELL Jr. – Jacksonville, FL
This TV did well with ATSC broadcast and HDMI inputs. The analog inputs, S-video and composite video, were less than satisfactory. If you intend to view analog sources a lot, this may not be the best choice for you.

How to Set Up Your TV Room to Get the Most Viewing Pleasure

You can really go all out with designing a TV room. So much is available. Big screen TVs, TV Projectors with a large screen, special chairs that give a “theater seating” experience, incredible TV sound systems that make you feel you’re right in the middle of the action. It all comes down to space, money, and making the two work together for setting up the best TV room that you can. So let’s start with…

Space, the major player in deciding what’s the best setup for watching TV:

If you have a big screen TV in a small room you’re really cramping your space. Especially if you have to sit close to the TV. Sitting too close will put a strain on the eyes. Not good. And being too close also causes you to miss out on the full effect of a big screen TV.

You can get just as much enjoyment watching from a smaller TV in a small room. So figure the amount of space you have and check various sizes of TVs for their viewing specifications. If you can afford it, try to get the biggest TV that will be the most compatible with your TV room. You’ll appreciate this move, especially in the future, if you decide you want to move the TV to a little bigger room.

Surround sound, give your small room, or any size room, that movie theater feeling:

There are all kinds of sound systems available. One thing to keep in mind, just because a particular sound system may be expensive it does not always mean that it will have great quality.

So what do you do to find a good sound system?

Check at stores or better yet, online. Prices will vary. Make a short list of your top 10 or top 8. Now search for sites that offer specific reviews for the sound system your interested in. Once you’ve found a couple of nice sound systems you’re really keen on, than see if you can get them on sale.

It also helps to know if the store offers some kind of support for putting up the system. If you’re new to putting in a new sound system, you should make sure the instructions are easy-to-follow. Try to take a look at the “installation manual” and see how easy it will be for you to install the system. Really good installation manuals will come with lots of pictures (my favorite kind of manual).

Some stores may even offer professional service where one of their technicians will come out and set up your system and show you how to use it. This will only happen where the service is available and you have purchased a “complete system”. This could save a lot of headaches.

And than you may know some one who is a wizard with technology. Never hurts to have one of these kind of friends. The person could come over and help set up your system and show you what you need to know. The cost could range from free, to a beer, or to dinner.

One final note of caution here. Going for cheap sound systems is a little bit like rolling dice–you take your chances. You want to make sure that whatever sound system you get, it will work smoothly and nicely with your TV giving you a really good show every time you watch your favorite program.

Setting up a TV room should be fun and exciting. Once the room is set up, you should start experiencing lot of great times watching movies, sports, listening to music or playing video games. It’s showtime!

Sony KV32HS510 32″ Flat-Screen HDTV Specifications

Step into the world of high-definition television with Sony’s KV-32HS510 HD-ready, flat-screen, Hi-Scan TV. Finished in stylish silver, this award-winning 32-inch WEGA set (it was a CNET Editor’s Choice in November 2003) features an FD Trinitron picture tube, a DVI connection for an HDTV tuner, a 10-bit 3D digital comb filter, and a Memory Stick slot.

The TV has a built-in 181-chanel NTSC tuner, and Sony’s Digital Reality Creation MultiFunction feature upconverts the analog NTSC signals to near-HD quality, though you’ll need a separate HDTV tuner to receive high-definition broadcasts. The KV-32HS510 set is compatible with the 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i formats.

The KV-32HS510 includes a strong selection of Sony video enhancements. The HD Detailer Wideband Video Amplifier offers a high-bandwidth frequency rating that results in finer picture quality from HD sources. The 10-bit 3D comb filter renders superb gray-scale gradation for amazing picture detail. The 3:2 pulldown cinema video processing detects and converts film–which is shot at 24 frames per second (fps) compared with video’s 30 fps rate–to video for a smooth, theaterlike experience at home.

Other Sony enhancements include the Twin View function, which enables you to watch programs side by side from two different HD sources, and a scrolling channel index, which provides a preview window of other channels along the right side of the screen.

You can view JPEG images captured from Sony digital cameras and camcorders using the built-in Memory Stick slot. Choose from an index of the images stored on the Memory Stick, or you can run a slideshow of those images.

The KV32HS510 has a built-in 15-watt subwoofer and two 7.5-watt speakers that produce TruSurround SRS audio. Two component-video inputs (both at the rear) allow you to connect an optional HDTV receiver or a source with component-video outputs. It also has a DVI input (rear), analog audio output (rear), 4 A/V inputs (3 front, 1 rear), 3 S-video inputs (2 front, 1 rear), and 1 each of S-Link output and input (for connecting other Sony components).

Tech Talk

  • Aspect ratio: The aspect ratio refers to the shape of the video image. Today’s standard television has a 4:3 aspect ratio, which is almost square in appearance. Digital television will have either a 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio. A 16:9 aspect ratio is widescreen and appears rectangular–it looks more like a movie screen, filling more of the viewer’s field of vision to yield a lifelike viewing experience.
  • Scanning method: Frames of video are made up of many lines that are scanned onto a television screen so closely they appear to be a solid picture. The scanning method can be either interlaced or progressive. Interlaced scanning (also used in today’s analog TV), indicated by an “i” in the video format, fills in the odd number lines (1,3,5,7…) and then fills in the even number lines (2,4,6,8…) until the frame is complete. Progressive scanning, “p,” fills in each line consecutively until the frame is complete, creating a seamless image.

4 years, and one large doorstop – Seaside920 – Midwest
We purchased this TV about 4 years ago. I’ve always hated the thing, since it weighs about 400 lbs. and every time we’ve wanted to move the beast, we have to beg someone to help get it to the new area.

This morning, we woke up, and the TV simply made a clicking sound like it wanted to start up. . . .but didn’t. After looking up what the blinking “stand-by” light stood for (1 blink means one thing, 6 blinks means something else, and all of it requires a service rep’s attention!) and talking to a Sony rep online, it looks like we either spend a pretty penny repairing this hulking mass, or buy a new television. Beware Sony TV’s–we will in the future. Bigger does NOT always mean better. Flat screens, here we come. . . .

DO NOT BUY THIS TV!!!!!!!! – W. Mac – Endwell, NY
Had this TV for 4 years. Some days it turns on and some days it does’nt. Called SONY and they told me I had to take it into a certified repair center, which, by the way, the closest one is 45 minutes from my house, not to mention..I can’t lift it!! Called the service guy..he told me it was the tube and would cost 5 to fix. Total load of crap….I did my own research and found that it is an electical problem with one or more circuit boards….very common with this model. Called SONY again…they basically said…too bad!! If you do your research, you will find this problem is very common with this model……A LOT OF MONEY TO PAY FOR A DISPOSABLE TV!!!!

Crisp image, beautiful blacks – nothing compares to true glass – Ty Morton –
Okay, it’s big and heavy; but totally worth it. Even friends that have plasmas and LCDs say “wow!” when they see it. True 1080 dpi, crystal clear sound and an attractive case. Worth every penny I paid for it!

Review Sony SLV-N81 4-Head Hi-Fi VCR

Sony SLV-N81 4-Head Hi-Fi VCR Best Review

Prior to purchasing this particular VCR a couple years ago I’d only ever purchased JVC VCR’s. As a matter of fact, at that time I’d been pretty heavily into JVC products but through word of mouth and some exploration at the stores, that was about to quickly change; this was but the first of several Sony electronics purchases that have all proven to be quite well made through years of enjoyable usage.

One of the most important features in a VCR is the quality of the image and sound in playback mode and I’ve found the playback quality on this Sony VCR to be outstanding with “near” DVD quality in image and the Hi-Fi sound is as good as can be expected from a VCR. Another extremely important aspect in a VCR is the quality of its recordings and this particular VCR records nearly flawless images, making the viewing experience of recordings that much better!

One feature that is highly important to most people is ease in programmability and it really couldn’t be any easier with this VCR especially given for the automatic presetting on the clock and TV channels that is fed from your cable company. In just a few short steps, you can program this VCR to tape all your favorite shows, hit the power button and it’s ready to do its job when the time comes. Also, for recording your favorite shows, this Sony VCR comes with the VCR Gold Plus+® System; making recording that much easier, providing you have your local cable listing. Should you desire to run this VCR through your cable box, it easily sets up in that manner and works perfectly as well.

Overall, I highly recommend this or any other of the line of outstanding Sony VCR’s as this was my first of two Sony VCR’s and in the future, should I need another; I won’t even look at another brand! {ssintrepid}

Sony SLV-N81 4-Head Hi-Fi VCR Feature

  • 4-head hi-fi VCR with plug-and-play setup
  • Connects with cable box/DIRECTV through cable mouse for simplified timer programming
  • Commercial skip, digital autotracking adjustment, and parental lock
  • Front and rear composite inputs, 1 set of composite outputs, and coaxial and S-link connectors
  • Hi-fi stereo recording and MTS stereo broadcast reception

Sony SLV-N81 4-Head Hi-Fi VCR Overview

The Sony SLV-N81 four-head VCR is a step up from most video recorders, as it coordinates between your VCR and cable box/DirecTV receiver using a cable mouse unit. This allows users to take advantage of the Pluscode numbers published in many TV directories, which include the date and time of the selected program. Merely enter the Pluscode number when using the VCR’s programming mode, and the recording timer is set. The VCR’s video performance is ensured by the four-head recording and playback, which enables two speeds for SP mode and two speeds for EP mode. The slower EP mode is nearly as sharp as the SP mode due to the 19-micron heads, which reduce distortion and deliver a clear, digital-like picture. In addition, the device employs a hi-fi audio recording system, which delivers a wide dynamic range and full audio frequency response.

Other features include auto tape speed, which automatically adjusts the tape speed from SP to EP if the programmed recording time runs longer than the remaining tape; adaptive picture control, which tests each tape and adjusts the playback and recording to receive the best picture quality; and commercial pass, which zips past unwelcome program interruptions. The SLV-N81 also employs plug-and-play setup, which automatically tunes the channels and sets the clock so users can enjoy the device straight out of the box. Other features include an eight-event timer, auto head cleaning, a multilingual onscreen display, a parental lock feature, and front composite inputs for connecting to a camcorder or game system. Other inputs and outputs include a coaxial connector, an additional set of composite inputs, an S-link connector, and a set of composite outputs. In addition, the SLV-N81 is Energy Star compliant.

Sony isn’t what they used to be. – Reuben K. – Honolulu, HI USA
I liked this VCR until I had to get it fixed. It was a minor thing, though, so I wasn’t worried. I was, though, ticked off when I was told (essentially) “Buy a new VCR!! We don’t want to fix it!! It’s too much of a hassle, and it just costs too much!!!” I found this odd. Especially since the VCR was (at that point) barely a couple of months old, and was under a warranty. I almost had to drag them kicking & screaming into their repair shop just to get them to do what they were supposed to. In the end, it didn’t even cost me anything … except my loyalty to their company. This sort of thing occurred anytime I went to down to Sony’s repair shop. In short, it was all part of a strategy to “convince” people to ditch VCR’s and go for their new (and more expensive) DVD recorders. I guess they figured that’d happen if they made it a pain in the butt for people like me just to get a simple adjustment made on a brand new VCR … which I find totally disgusting.

This VCR was the most expensive that Sony had for sale at the time (I paid around $[...]). Unfortunately, all the high tech stuff that I was used to seeing in their VCR’s was nowhere to be found. There were two features, though, that made it stand out from the rest:

1) A wheel/knob thingy on the front that allows you to set the time & set programmed recording events without having to turn the TV on.

2) Adaptive Picture Control (APC): It allows the VCR to customize recordings to each video tape, allowing great quality.

Unfortunately, though, the 2nd feature has been taken out of Sony VCR’s since then, so the picture quality isn’t that great anymore. Of course, they could’ve come up with something else. But if they have, I haven’t heard about it. And even if they did, big deal. If they’re going to do everything they can not to fix your VCR, and force you to buy a new one the minute something goes wrong, what’s the point in buying a Sony VCR? The next time you’re in the market for a VCR, I’d go for a TiVo. Or a DVD recorder. Or both. And if you really have to get a VCR, don’t get a Sony. You don’t need the hassle.

Goodbye Panasonic. Hello Sony. – MarkItWell – Atlanta, GA
I’ve only had Panasonic VCRs in the past, but had to take back two bogus (poorly designed and produced) models in the past year, so I did the research and tried this unit. It’s awesome, with easy, logical programming and the finest picture available from material it records itself. The EP picture is surprisingly clear and noise free, and there’s no comparison between the quality video of this unit compared with the dull, lifeless and grainy recordings and playbacks of Panasonic units.

Completely seizes up. – –
Maybe I just got a lemon, but after only two months we’ve had nothing but problems. At least once a day when trying to put a tape in, it refuses to take it and then the entire machine seizes up – it won’t even turn off or on. The only thing to do is unplug it and then turn it back on. Today I had to send it in for a warranty repair when after unplugging it, it still wouldn’t do anything. This is in addition to it suddenly stopping while it’s recording. Set it up to record, come home and find it quit after 10 or 15 minutes. Junk!

HDMI 1.4 – Enhanced Features and Functionalities For Digital Connectivity

HDMI 1.4 is the new specification for HDMI, the acronym for High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI). Like previous versions of the specification, HDMI Licensing, LLC is the licensing body for this new specification version HDMI 1.4. An HDMI cable – that has implemented earlier versions of the specification – is used for high quality multimedia experience while connecting audio and video sources like HDTVs.

For further improvement in the multimedia experience, the new HDMI 1.4 specification implements several advancements in areas such as Network Capability, Resolution Improvement and Automotive Connection System. You can download the HDMI 1.4 specification from the HDMI Licensing, LLC. website.

Let’s take a look at the some of the changes, including advancements that HDMI 1.4 brings to your multimedia experience in the near future:

HDMI Ethernet Channel

HDMI 1.4 plans to append a data channel to the pre-existing HDMI cable. This ensures an increase in bi-directional communication speed. Moreover, this additional data channel would make the devices immediately ready for IP-based applications. Another significant advantage that HDMI Ethernet channel delivers is its capability to share an internet connection with any other HDMI device without the use of a separate cable.

Audio Return Channel

HDMI 1.4 provides a new Audio Return channel. This Audio Return Channel reduces the number of cables that are required and yet ensures that HDTV can send an audio stream to an Audio/Visual receiver through the HDMI cable.

Common Format and Resolution for 3D

If there is a problem in playing different 3D formats on a 3D home theatre system, this 1.4 version takes care of the problem by standardizing the I/O portion of your system. At the same time, the resolution is defined in such a way that your high-definition devices can play files having dual stream and that have resolutions up to 1080p. Thus, you get a common format and resolution for all 3D files that your HDMI-enabled devices can play.

Support for Higher Resolutions

A user can also play files with higher resolutions, up to 4k x 2k, using this specification. It enables every HDMI device to provide the required support, which will help in transmitting content at a resolution similar to the ones used in most digital theaters.

Reproduction of Accurate Colors for Digital Still Camera Images

HDMI 1.4 specification also supports color spaces. It allows HDMI enabled devices to reproduce accurate colors of images taken through a digital still camera on different applications including Adobe RGB, AdobeYCC601 and sYCC601.

Micro HDMI Connector: Smaller Size, More Features

The Micro HDMI Connector is not only smaller in size than the existing version – currently used in HDMI devices – but it also provides support for high resolutions (up to 1080p) that can play on most portable devices.

Automotive Connection System

Automobile manufacturers face problems in HD content distribution, mainly due to the presence of environment issues that include heat, noise and vibration. HDMI 1.4 has provided a solution to these problems in the form of an automotive connection system. This feature has been designed for high-quality in-vehicle HD-Content distribution.

HDMI 1.4 is the new way of defining digital connectivity and is targeted for both consumer electronic gadgets as well as PCs, in the near future.

What is the Best PC For Computer Gaming?

Dell, HP, Alienware, Compaq, Gateway, Falcon Northwest, iBuy Power, and so many more computer manufacturers tout their computers as top of the line. How do you know what is the best PC for computer Gaming? If you make your decision based on the CPU and memory like so many people do you are going to be sorely disappointed. There are many more components that are as important if not more so than the CPU. To get you started here are 3 of the most important components you should evaluate when purchasing a Gaming Computer.

1. The video card

The video card is probably the most important component of a gaming computer. Many lower priced off-the-shelf systems use integrated video cards. What this means is that the graphics are handled by a chip that is integrated into the motherboard. You may wonder what the difference is. To try to use an integrated graphics solution for a gaming computer is like putting a little 4 cylinder engine in a Corvette. It might look great but the performance is going to be extremely disappointing.

You don’t need the absolute top of the line video card, but you certainly want to get a card that will perform well. Currently the ATI Radeon HD 5850 is a great choice. It isn’t overly expensive but it will give you great performance. Other video cards with similar performance are the Nvidia GTX 280, GTX 285, and the GTX 470. There are many other options at verying price ranges so do a little research. If someone tries to present a computer with an integrated or on-board graphics solution you are getting ripped off. Shop somewhere else.

2. The CPU

As mentioned, don’t make your decision based solely on the CPU. With that being said it is very important that we get a PC with a CPU that will not bottleneck our video card. We don’t want a budget processor. Look for a Core i5 or Core i7 processor if you are buying an Intel based machine. For AMD platforms look for a Phenom II X3 or X4 processor.

3. Power Supply

If you have a dinky power supply you won’t have enough juice to run your components. Symptoms of an inadequate power supply include your computer randomly shutting down and lag during game play. Issues stemming from power supplies are often misdiagnosed as other problems. Make sure your computer has a large enough power supply. You can find power supply calculators online. Enter your components and it will calculate how much power you need. Keep in mind that not all power supplies are created equal. Make sure you purchase from a quality manufacturer such as Antec, Corsair, Silverstone, etc.

If you really want to be sure you get the most computer for your money you may want to consider building your own gaming computer. It’s actually not very difficult and it allows you to select all of your own components. One of the problems with off the shelf computers is that you have no way of knowing what they use for some of the components. When you build a gaming computer you choose all of your own hardware. It will allow you to get a higher performing computer for the same price if not less than the name brand computers.

Check out Gaming-Computers.net for hardware reviews, build guides, and tutorials. It is an excellent resource dedicated to gaming computers and you don’t have to be an engineer to understand it. There is even a step-by-step tutorial on how to build a gaming computer.
